Flaxseeds are an excellent plant source of the omega 3 fatty acid, alpha linolenic acid (ALA). Recent studies indicate that flaxseeds may help reduce cancer. A study from Toronto had a group of women awaiting breast cancer surgery eat muffins containing 25 grams of ground flaxseeds, once a day. There was also a control group where women ate muffins not containing flaxseeds. Researchers discovered the group eating flaxseed muffins showed slower growing tumors, compared to the women that didn’t eat the muffins with flaxseeds. Researcher believe it could be the lignans found in flaxseeds that may have exerted the reduction in tumor growth.
